Founded in 1943 by Dale and Monti Dahlke as the Soveran Buffalo Company in Waterville, this was the first buffalo ranch in Washington State. From the beginning, its mission has been to preserve the American bison as an essential part of our natural history.
In 2024, after Darush and Nicole purchased the ranch, Soveran evolved into Washington Buffalo Ranch—a dedicated Buffalo Reservation Project committed to conservation, growth, and protecting the legacy of this iconic species.
The American buffalo is a living symbol of strength, resilience, and heritage. Once numbering over 30 million, their population fell to fewer than 1,000 in the 1800s—a near loss of both an animal and a way of life.
Today, preserving buffalo is more than saving a species. It is restoring balance to the land, honoring Indigenous traditions, and protecting a vital part of our shared history.
By helping buffalo thrive again, we safeguard a story of survival and ensure that future generations inherit the legacy of America’s greatest icon.
